What Is a Horse Trailer’s Measurements and How Much Does It Weigh?
Before we can determine what Class C RV can pull a horse trailer, we need more information about the trailer itself, such as its dimensions and weight. the world you come from – they are no one-size-fits-all solution.
Some horse trailers are designed for up to two horses, others for three, even more for eight and some trailers for more than eight horses. Let’s take a closer look at the different sizes of horse trailers.
One-Horse to Three-Horse Trailers
Single horse Trailers are the most compact horse trailers on the market.
EquiSpirit, a manufacturer of horse trailers, has a horse trailer called SoleMate that we will use as an example.
This trailer alone weighs 2,780 pounds. It is 14 ½ feet long and 7 feet, 6 inches high on the inside. The trailer has a saddle area of 24 square meters. Its tailgate measures 20 “by 24” and the SoleMate’s axle capacity is 7,000 pounds.
Two horses? If you need a standardized two horse trailer it could be 6 feet wide by 7 feet 6 inches high. A pendant of this size is 10 feet long for the saddle and 2 feet long for the total length of up to 4 1/2 feet.
This two horse trailer can weigh 2,800 pounds or more. If you have larger horses, you may need a two horse XL trailer with an interior height of 7 feet, 8 inches. This trailer can be longer at 4.5 feet, increasing the total weight to around 3,030 pounds.
For even larger horses, an XXL two-horse trailer would be 6 feet, 8 inches wider without changing the length or height of the trailer. This trailer would weigh more because of its wider stature, perhaps around 3,230 pounds. As with a standard three-horse trailer, the inside can be 7 feet 8 inches by 6 feet 8 inches wide and 29 feet 6 inches long.
Adding the extra weight increases the weight of the trailer to 6,300 pounds. Three horse trailers are pulled by some SUVs and pickups.
Four-Horse Trailers
Once you have more than three horses you will need to look for a larger trailer.
A four horse trailer can have a total bed length of 21 feet 6 inches and a total length of 29 inches with the gooseneck between 7 feet 4 inches and 7 feet 6 inches with a post width of 40 inches and a post length of 117 inches.
A standard four horse trailer weighs 6,300 pounds or more. If you have larger horses, you may need an XL trailer for two horses with an interior height of 7 feet, 8 inches.
This trailer could be longer at 15½ feet and add the total weight to around 3,030 pounds. For even larger horses, an XXL two-horse trailer would be 6 feet, 8 inches wider without changing the length or height of the trailer.
This trailer would weigh more because of its wider stature, perhaps around 3,230 pounds. As with a standard three horse trailer, the inside can be 7 feet 8 inches by 6 feet 8 inches wide and 29 feet 6 inches long. A heavy weight increases the trailer’s weight to 6,300 pounds.
Some pickups and vans can pull smaller trailers with one to three horses.
Eight-Horse Trailers
What if you have twice as many horses as in a four horse trailer? Then you need an eight-horse trailer that can usually be pulled over a gooseneck or semi-trailer, as well as dual-style pickups that can pull up to a ton.
Eight horses from 4 Start Trailers are 7 feet tall, 44 feet long, and 8 feet 6 inches wide. The trailer list doesn’t mention weight, but we’re assuming it’s somewhere in the 10,000-pound stadium, maybe a little less.
If you have a trailer this size you can still use a gooseneck for transportation. You can also try a semi-trailer that is heavy enough for the job too.
